Whole-home surge protection installs a device directly at your electrical panel that guards your entire home's electrical system against power surges, rather than relying on individual plug-in surge protectors that only protect whatever's plugged into them. A whole-home unit catches surges before they reach any circuit in the house, protecting HVAC systems, appliances, and electronics that plug-in protectors simply can't reach.
This is worth considering if you've had appliances or electronics damaged by a power surge in the past, if you live in an area with frequent storms or lightning that puts your home's electrical system at higher surge risk, if you have significant investment in HVAC equipment, home electronics, or appliances that would be costly to replace, or if you simply want comprehensive protection rather than piecing it together with individual plug-in units room by room, which never covers hardwired equipment like your HVAC system anyway.
We start by assessing your panel and electrical system to determine the right surge protection device for your home's setup. Installation means mounting the surge protection device at or near your electrical panel and wiring it into the system so it monitors and protects every circuit running through that panel. We test the installation to confirm proper function, and for homes with a subpanel, we discuss whether additional protection there makes sense depending on what's connected to it. The device works continuously in the background, requiring no action from you unless it eventually needs replacement after absorbing a significant surge event.
Cost is relatively modest compared to the equipment it protects, and depends mainly on the specific device and whether any additional panel work is needed during installation. Homes in Newton, MA in storm-prone areas often see this as one of the more cost-effective protective investments available for an electrical system.
